By definition, leaders hold a dominant or superior position within a field and is able to exercise a high degree of control and influence over others. Leaders are in a position to manage people and it could be a couple handful or even in the hundreds in the corporate context. A person can be a leader by position, seniority or by charisma. Leading others is a tough job because there will be expectations to meet and people will judge and watch everything that you do. Some people struggle to lead because the foundation of leadership is not strong.
Here are some reasons why leadership fail:
In managing a team, leaders will surely face problems and challenges because they will need to find a way to influence the different types of people that make up the team. When a leader fail to drive his team in the direction they need to go, the team will be unable to reach the KPI collectively. A leader that has strong leadership skill will convince others to learn and follow him. Those who are under an institution with strong leadership will always go the extra mile to accomplish the leader’s directive, because of their respect for the leader. Leadership can be trained from young as observed in schools, where students are trusted to be figures of authority such as class monitors, school prefects or even head of associations.
Another key role of leaders is to inspire vision in the group of people he is leading. Employees may not buy into the idea of a corporate vision, hence, a leader will need to do his best to set a benchmark and influence his team to work towards a common goal. A shared vision is important as it will be a source of motivation to rope in the team to work hand-in-hand and achieve the vision. Leaders must first be a visionary to bring the team together as a unit. Being far-sighted is also a quality a leader must possess to prepare the entire team for the future.
Leaders will have to honour their words and fulfil any promises ever made. The ability to so will reflect on the leader himself as a person, allowing his team to trust him. It is funny that you can do 99 things for a person, and all they will remember is the one thing that you didn’t do. Thus, hold on to the integrity of living up to your promise to build the trust of your people.
As a leader, you cannot escape from having to deal with conflicts in the team or outside. How well you deal with conflict will reflect on you as leader, and being technically sound in your field of expertise is not enough. You will be required to communicate well with the different types of people you manage, and they may come from diverse backgrounds. The trick to leading well is to first win their hearts and you will be able to influence them to cooperate with you towards achieving the common vision shared as a team.
An effective leader will assign the right person for a job, by first determining the skill and qualities needed to get the job done. Subsequently, the leader will have to filter his team and determine the best person fulfilling the criteria and assign that person to carry out the task. Effective leaders will always do their best to optimise productivity and performance by minimising errors. This can be accomplished by getting a qualified person to perform the job, because a wrong decision can affect the outcome of a job performance.
Being a leader is not easy as people will look to you for solution to any problems that may arise, especially in the work context. Your team will expect you to lead and make decisions, so that they can execute the necessary orders. If a leader is indecisive or slow to decide, this will affect the company if the problem is left to multiply. The issue is not whether a leader is skilled or equipped to solve the problem himself, but instead, be able to galvanize the team and leverage on the collective skills of the whole team to solve the problem. This will require a leader to have a sharp mind and ability to take risk and make firm decisions.
