Most people fear public speaking and tremble at the thought of having to stand in front of a crowd to talk. A general survey in the United States showed that people fear speaking in public more than they fear death. However, in the business context, there is no avoiding it. One of the most common forms would be business presentations, be it to board of directors or clients.

What are the most common challenges of presentation?

  1. Poor Preparation

The lack of preparation is the ultimate killer of any presentation. This will spoil the opportunity for a speaker to make a good impression. The opportunity may be the only chance for the presenter to impress a potential client and close a deal. The factors that may cause poor preparation could be due to inadequate knowledge in preparing for a presentation, usage of slides, time management and how to phrase one’s presentation.

  1. Not Engaging Audience

Most presenters and speakers are not trained in the skill of engaging their audience. Anyone may be able to deliver a presentation, but the effectiveness of the presentation is dependent on how well the presenter is able to capture the audience’s attention. A presenter can feed the audience bucket loads of information, but may not successfully get them to buy the idea. There are actually 27 strategies to employ to engage an audience. Presenters generally have the wrong idea, thinking that they are actually engaging a crowd by speaking to them. The generic means used by presenters to engage crowd could be by telling stories, showing video clips and asking the crowd questions.

  1. Wrong Sequence of Slide Presentation

In any presentation, content organisation is a critical aspect to ensure that the message is delivered in the manner intended. If a presenter does not know how to organise their information structure, the flow of presentation will be messy and can lead to confusion. Sequencing of the slides and information is crucial to avoid bombarding the audience with similar examples or repeated messages. Redundancies in presentation should be avoided at all cost to refrain from wasting audience’s time and affecting the value of the presentation.

  1. No Key Message

Many times, presenters lose sight of the key message that they seek to deliver to the audience. On other occasions, presenters themselves are not really clear of the ultimate message that they wish to share with the audience. This will reduce the effectiveness of the presentation as presenters may end up delivering too many messages, which will confuse and distract the audience. Absence of key point in a message defies the purpose of having a presentation in the first place.

  1. Inability to Handle Questions

Apart from delivering winning presentations that ‘wow’ the crowd, the closing of a presentation is as important. Being able to take questions and respond accordingly is a skill every presenter will need to equip themselves with. However, the ability to do so comes from experience. Presenters may be at risk if they do not prepare well. Fumbling and mumbling as a response to a question will destroy a presenter’s credibility, regardless of how good he or she was in delivering the presentation. A presenter must always be prepared to receive friendly, tricky or even sensitive questions that may touch on politics and religion, and be able to respond in the best way possible.

  1. Boring Presentations

A presenter is always being judged when he is up front to deliver his presentation. A presenter’s credibility will be assessed based on his knowledge, experience, and ability to articulate his ideas. A good presenter will have the ability to turn even the most boring topic into an exciting and value-added session for his audience. Adversely, a boring presentation will have the crowd dozing off or distracted during his presentation.
